It is not always easy to tell the difference between pilgrims and tourists. Both may be found visiting sacred sites, and both may aim to prolong the experience or retain its benefits by recording their journey and bringing back souvenirs. In many cases, there may be no clear purpose as this is something that may only emerge as a journey progresses. It is not unusual that what was intended as a pilgrimage turns into a more secular experience.
The Holy Land still acts as a focal point for the pilgrimages of the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. These pilgrims visit the Holy Land to touch and see physical manifestations of their faith, confirm their beliefs in the holy context with collective excitation, and connect personally to the Holy Land.
Many people today are still following the more traditional pilgrimage journeys but they are now traveling more in groups, and from a prospective of discovering the destinations than from a place of personal spiritual renewal. Larger groups are making their way together to the main religious sites of various faiths. They all have personal reasons for joining the group trip, but many people are going to commune and fellowship with like-mind believers of their faith. They are more like tourists in many cases, than what our ancestors did on religious pilgrimages.
